AFP recruits undergo an intensive 24-week training program, which combines theory, practical application of knowledge, team projects individual research, simulations and mandatory fitness training. Those AFP recruits assigned to ACT Policing will be initially posted to a patrol team at one of the five police stations located in the ACT (City, Belconnen, Gungahlin, Woden and Tuggeranong).

Opportunities for advancement to specialist policing roles, both in community policing or within national or international operations of the AFP are available.
