Aptitude and psychological screening

As part of the Police Officer recruitment process you are required to undergo cognitive and aptitude and psychometric testing. The timed cognitive and aptitude test is conducted online and will take twenty minutes to complete. This measures reasoning ability using your verbal, numerical and abstract skills.

You are required to meet a minimum standard on this test before progressing to the next stage of the selection process. If you are unsuccessful it will be 12 months (from the date of initial testing) before you are eligible to undertake testing again

If you are preparing for testing, these tips may help:

  • Some candidates may feel that it would be beneficial to have some practice at the style of aptitude testing used. To assist you in understanding the style of testing, you can access an example test at www.onetest.com.au.
  • Avoid interruptions by finding a quiet location to undertake testing and turn off your mobile or telephone.
  • Ensure that you are well rested and avoid alcohol before undertaking the test.
  • Engage in some kind of relaxation activity before starting the test.
  • During timed tests, try to not spend too much time on any one question. If there is time remaining, you will be able to return to review questions.
  • More general information on aptitude testing and psychometric testing is readily available on the Internet, or can be found in the self-development section of bookstores. In addition, the Onetest website www.onetest.com.au also has information about the tests and example questions.
