Commander David McLean
Commander David McLean is currently performing the role of Deputy Chief Police Officer – Response, ACT Policing. His portfolio responsibilities within the ACT include Operations (police communications), Traffic Operations, Emergency Management and Planning and North and South District general duties.
Previous roles occupied by Commander McLean include that of Chief of Staff, responsible for the coordination of information, administrative and support services provided to the Commissioner and AFP Executive; and Manager Aviation, responsible for the AFP’s operational presence at Australia’s major airports.
Commander McLean has 19 years experience in law enforcement, commencing his AFP career in criminal investigations in Queensland in 1991. He has managed AFP regional offices in North Queensland and the Gold Coast as well as having gained experience in the investigation of financial markets and major corporations via secondment to Australia’s corporate regulator, the Australian Securities and Investment Commission.
During 1995 and 1996, Commander McLean was seconded to the Queensland Police Service as part of a federal-state joint task force to combating heroin trafficking involving South East Asian criminal networks and in 2001 was responsible for the design and delivery of advanced narcotics training to gulf-state participants in Pakistan under the auspices of the United Nations Drug Control Program.
In 2002, he was assigned to the role of Law Enforcement Liaison Officer in the Office of the Minister for Justice and Customs at Parliament House, Canberra. In that capacity Commander McLean represented the AFP and Australian Crime Commission in providing operational briefings and advice to the Minister for Justice and Customs and the Attorney General.
From 2004 to 2007, Commander McLean was stationed in Washington DC where he served as the AFP Senior Liaison Officer responsible for cooperation with the United States and Canada on policing issues.
Commander McLean is a graduate of the AFP Management of Serious Crime Program and the Australian Institute of Police Management. He holds a Bachelor of Business and a Graduate Certificate of Applied Management.
